Lunch Break Videos: A trio of classic scenes featuring the great cast of “Designing Women”

http://www.insidesocal.com/outinhollywood/,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,smart.jpgWhat can I say? Watching episodes of Designing Women just makes me happy.

This brilliant sitcom is so smart, so well-written and perfectly performed that when you look back on it now, you marvel at its excellence. The cast is so comfortable in the skin of their character and really make the most of the material.

For your enjoyment (and mine!), here are three scenes from the series which ran from 1986-1993.

I’m cracking up all over again over this season three scene. Julia (Dixie Carter) participates in a fashion show and does not realize that her dress is tucked up in her pantyhose. When they return from the show, she asks the girls: “What I don’t understand is why didn’t somebody TELL me?” To which her sister Suzanne (Delta Burke) replies: “What I don’t understand is WHERE were your underwear?”

This is a short one featuring the brilliant Delta Burke. Her Suzanne is such a comic gem and when the character goes off on some kind of anecdote from her beauty pageant days it is always such a hoot. Here, she goes on about Colleen Metcalfe, a woman who ended up having way too much plastic surgery.

And finally, this scene from season five features Charlene (Jean Smart) and Mary Jo (Annie Potts) at a salad bar. Mary Jo has borrowed Susanne’s pearl necklace and loses it – she thinks somewhere in a salad bar. My favorite line is when Charlene is caught by a restaurant employee with her arm elbow deep in salad dressing, keeps her dignity and asks: “Is this French or Thousand Island?”
