Lunch Break Video: In tribute to the late John Mahoney, here is the best of Marty Crane

Frasier is one of the my all-time favorite shows and John Mahoney was one of the reasons why.

The Tony award winning actor who played Marty Crane, the blue-collar, retired-cop foil to on-screen sons Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, passed away due to complications from cancer while in hospice care on Sunday.

Among his many other roles on stage and screen, Mahoney had a memorable role in the gay classic The Broken Hearts Club and also appeared as an elderly drag queen in the ER season.

Following his death, he was identified by acquaintances as openly but quietly gay.

2 Remarks

  1. Was so sad to hear about Mahoney’s passing recently. I loved his portrayal of the father and he was also my favorite on “Frasier” which happens to be one of my all-time favorite television shows. RIP.

  2. John lived here in the Chicago area and did a lot of theater work. Although David Hyde Pierce was always deserving of every Emmy he won, I always hoped that John would be rewarded too since he was wonderful on Frasier. John will be missed…a very lovely man.
