Lunch Break Video: In celebration of Delta Burke’s 55th birthday, some classic Suzanne Sugarbaker moments

Delta Burke is one of the all-time great sitcom stars and my birthday wish for her is that someone can come up with a role for her in a show that is as great as that of the sassy Suzanne Sugarbaker on Designing Women.

What a delicious part that was – the perfect match of actress and character. I often watch the episodes on DVD and am just so in awe of Delta’s timing and delivery. She also gave beauty queen Suzanne a vulnerability that made you forgive her for the thoughtless, self-absorbed things she would say at times.

My other favorite characters of Delta’s are Cherry Cherry from the cult hit TV series Popular and Noleta Nethercott from the classic indie film Sordid Lives.

Delta has not appeared in screen since a 2009 guest spot on Drop Dead Diva. She has been very candid about her battles with depression which no doubt impacts her career at times.

Here’s hoping she’s feeling well and about to enter a productive stretch because I miss seeing her on TV. Thankfully, I’ll always have my Designing Women DVDs!

Happy birthday Delta!

    Greg-
Thank you for these Delta Burke aka Suzanne Sugarbaker classic clips.
Nice way to enjoy a Monday!

  2. I will always remember DELTA BURKE as a unique, ambitious young woman who had her sights set on one goal – stardom! I am one of the very few fans who knew her when she had an 18-inch waistline! During the early days of her career she bore a striking resemblance to Vivien Leigh when she appeared in ‘Gone With The Wind’. In fact, Delta told me Miss Leigh was her icon in show business and she collected memorabilia of her career.
