Liza, Barbra & Aretha pay tribute to Hamlisch

Wow. Marvin Hamlisch had to be one heckuva guy to get Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin all in one room to sing in tribute to him.

The three-time Oscar winner died on August 6 after a brief illness and an invitation only tribute to him was held at New York’s Juilliard School for the Arts where, as a child genius, he was a student.

Liza sang If You Really Knew Me from the musical They’re Playing My Song, and told the crowd: “He was one of my few constants. He was always there. He always was and always will be.”

Franklin belted out Nobody Does it Better which Carly Simon made a big hit and was the theme song to the James Bond flick The Spy Who Loved Me while Streisand performed The Way We Were – both songs were written by Hamlisch.

Streisand said they forged a friendship based on a shared passion for “music, film and food” and “without explaining why or how, we understood each others anxieties.”

2 Remarks

  1. This is a wonderful photo of two of our greatest female entertainers.

And they look great! Yes they are true gay icons, greatly gifted and very generous spirits. Happy genuine smiles and sharing the love. Thanks so much for posting the terrific photo.

PS _ Yes, we are all going to miss the great Marvin!

  2. I agree with Max so glad to see this photo of the two of them together!
Barbra is a lesson in aging gracefully she looks great and ready to tour. It has always amazed me with the kind of fame she has had and still enjoys that she has kept it together, unlike many others stars her caliber.
As she herself says in a line from ‘Funny Girl’ I’m the greatest star…that she is!
