Legendary Rita Moreno to be honored with 2013 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award
Showbiz’s first EGOT is going to become an EGOTSAG.
Rita Moreno, the first winner of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony has just been announced as the 50th recipient of SAG-AFTRA’s highest tribute – the SAG Life Achievement Award.
What an inspired choice!
This is a performer who, at 81, is still in our living rooms each week as Fran Drescher’s mother on Happily Divorced.
Her show biz career has been quite varied and includes playing saucy Anita in the film version of West Side Story, playing a Puerto Rican bathhouse singer Googie Gomez in Broadway’s The Ritz as well as in the film version, and appearing for years as a nun/psychologist on HBO’s gritty prison drama Oz.
There were also her years as a cast member – with Morgan Freeman – on the children’s TV series The Electric Company.
But there’s so, so much more from appearing in the movies The King and I and Singin’ in the Rain to London’s West End as the lead in Sunset Boulevard.
She has done it all!
Moreno has also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of the Arts, and was inducted into the California Hall of Fame by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
