Legendary designer Bob Mackie on Cher’s daring Billboard Music Awards outfits

Cher stole the show at this week’s Billboard Music Awards and did so dressed in two very revealing outfits designed by Bob Mackie.

‘She was never intimidated to wear something daring and still isn’t—at 71, it’s not easy to pull something like the Billboard costumes off, but if anyone can, Cher can,’ Mackie tells Vanity Fair.

Cher wore a Swarovski crystal–embellished fringed number to perform Believe and Twitter was absolutely abuzz over what seemed to be a see-through outfit.

‘Everyone thought she was wearing a pastie during the performance at the awards show, and she wasn’t,’ Mackie says.

‘It was a single crystal heart hand-sewn right over its proper spot on her body. The whole thing was one of the most expensive costumes she’s ever worn, with thousands of crystals.’

Cher then changed wigs and into a glittery black sheer bodysuit and moto jacket for If I Could Turn Back Time.

Mackie had made the outfit for Cher’s current residency at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas.

The two go way back.

Mackie first designed for Cher 50 years ago when she was on top of the record charts with such songs as I Got You Babe with then-husband Sonny Bono as well as such solo hits as Bang Bang (My Baby Shot me Down).

Mackie went on to do her outfits for her various TV variety shows in the 1970s with and without Bono.

He also was responsible for her Academy Awards outfits over the years including the see-through number she accepted the best actress award for Moonstruck in 1988.

Most famously, Mackie designed a midriff-baring outfit with a giant Mohawk headdress that Cher wore to the 1986 ceremony as a statement when she shockingly wasn’t nominated for Mask.

Mackie also designed the costumes for the entire 11 year run of The Carol Burnett Show and has also designed for Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and Tina Turner, among others.
