Laverne Cox basking in Rocky Horror Picture glow
Laverne Cox’s re-creation of the character of Dr. Frank-N-Furter will be unveiled to the world on October 20 with the premiere of Fox’s Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.
The musical and dancing chops of the transgender actress are showcased in the Sweet Transvestite number as she attempts to make an iconic character all her own.
‘I just can’t believe that I’m a black trans woman who has this whole production sort of created around her,’ Cox tells Entertainment Weekly.
‘It feels revolutionary and what Rocky Horror is all about. It’s been such an absolute joy.’
Of the transvestite Fran-N-Furter Cox says: ‘She’s sexy, she’s psychotic, she’s domineering, she’s coquettish. She’s also really vulnerable and gets hurt. She’s an alien but has these deeply human qualities.’
Cox’s version of the character is more glamorous and dance heavy than Tim Curry’s take in the original 1975 cult classic.
‘(Director) Kenny Ortega said he wanted 60% Grace Jones, 30% Tina Turner and 10% Beyonce,’ Cox says with a laugh.
‘So that was kind of the movement and visual language we established.’
That said, Cox also says: ‘I have such love and reverence for the original film and for what Tim Curry did.’
