Lainie Kazan arrested for allegedly shoplifting $180 worth of groceries from a Gelson’s market in LA
Last night over Christmas dinner my little sister says to me: “Did you hear the mom from Beaches got arrested?”
I stopped eating my turkey and had my teenaged niece look up a story on her phone: “It’s spelled L-A-I-N-I-E” I said to her – as in the great star Lainie Kazan.
E! News reports: Kazan allegedly loaded up a cart at a Gelson’s supermarket in Los Angeles with $180 worth of food, put it all into several reusable bags and walked outside without paying, TMZ reported, citing law enforcement sources. A store worker then stopped her and the police were called, the outlet said.
Kazan was arrested for petty theft, handcuffed and taken to a police station, then was later released without bail, TMZ reported. A police spokesperson confirmed to E! News that Kazan was cited for shoplifting and released but offered no further details. TMZ cited its source as saying that Kazan had said she had no money on her at the time of the incident.
Kazan rose to fame more than 50 years ago as the understudy for Barbra Streisand in the original Broadway production of Funny Girl. She went on only one time but had her mother alert the critics. She was a sensation and a star was born. She went on to appear in such films as My Favorite Year, One From the Heart and, of course, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Let’s hope this is just a bit misunderstanding and that Lainie left her wallet at home. I’d hate to think that this great showbiz survivor who has weathered several up and downs is having hard times.
