LA fundraiser for President Obama draws Ellen, Cher, Chaz, Jane Lynch, George Takei and more!

LGBT stars and allies feted President Barack Obama in Los Angeles last night at a gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel followed by an exclusive after-party at the home of Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

Obama’s public support of gay marriage last month set the stage for the president to receive a hero’s welcome as he raises money for his election battle against presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

“I could not be prouder of the work that we’ve done on behalf of the LGBT community,” Obama told the sold out crowd of 600 at The Beverly Wilshire.

Among the Hollywood attendees were Cher and son Chaz Bono, performers Ellen DeGeneres and Darren Criss, Glee star Jane Lynch, Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, singer Lance Bass, Will & Grace creator Max Mutchnick, Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Star Trek icon George Takei, Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin, director Paris Barclay, actresses Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, some of the guests donated up to $25,000 each to Obama’s reelection effort for a chance to mingle — and have their picture taken — with the president.

Daily Variety’s Wilshire & Washington blog reports that $3 million was raised at the events.

Black, the Milk and J. Edgar screenwriter who had been critical of Obama before he came out for gay marriage, told Variety: “It is important that we get gay and lesbian people motivated. I think he did it.”

“He stepped on stage and said, ‘Here I am,’ and we said, ‘We heard you.’”

One Remark

  1. What really scares me is the amount of money the Koch brothers are going to throw at the President. They spent 30 million in Winconsin and it worked. Our elections have become auctions.
