Kim Clijsters wins tour year-end championships!

Kim Clijsters

The 2010 season ended Sunday for women’s tennis with reigning US Open champion Kim Clijsters beating the top ranked Caroline Wozniacki to take the WTA Championships in Doha.

Clijsters came out of a three-year retirement last year and has done quite well for herself winning back-to-back US Opens. She won a total of five tournaments this year, more than any other player on tour except for Wozniacki who won six.

“It was a tough match,” Clijsters said after earning $1.4 million with the win. “I’m glad I won and it must be disappointing for Caroline, but I don’t know how many more years I’m going to keep doing this.”

Clijsters won her 40th career title after victories in Brisbane, Miami, Cincinnati and at the U.S. Open this year. She became the fifth player in WTA history to win the season-ending tournament three or more times, joining Martina Navratilova (8), Steffi Graf (5), Chris Evert (4) and Monica Seles (3).

I’m hoping to see either Clijsters or Wozniacki emerge as the dominant player next season in a sport that desperately needs one. Serena Williams, winner of this year’s Wlmbledon and Australian Open, has slipped to fourth in the rankings.

Serena has been out of the game since early July with a foot injury but doesn’t seem capable of a full effort at any tournament unless it is one of the sport’s four grand slams. It would be nice to see someone with commitment and guts enough to be a number one player week in and week out who every0ne fears.
