Kathy Griffin, up for two more Emmys, has been tapped to host the “Schmemmys” [Updated]
This is perfect!
Kathy Griffin has pretty much put the Creative Arts Emmys on the map with her wins for best reality series the past two years. Her “Suck it Jesus, this award is my God now” speech after her first win made all sorts of headlines for the awards show that takes place the week before the actual Emmy telecast.
So who better to host this year’s show than the red-headed D-Lister herself? It’s just been announced that Kathy will headline the event on Saturday, Sept. 12 from the NOKIA Theatre. The show will air as a two-hour special on E! Entertainment Television.
“We’re thrilled as Kathy’s the first Emmy winner to host the Creative Arts show. She stole the show the last two years, so now, we’re giving her the opportunity to officially hijack it. We’re all very, very excited. And just a little bit scared,” producer Spike Jones, Jr. said in a statement.
Last year’s host was Neil Patrick Harris and this year, he’s the actual Emmy host!
I had a lot of fun covering the Creative Arts Emmys last year and got to chat with Kathy on the red carpet of the Nokia that day.
I wondered if she felt maybe a tad remorseful for giving the event what is now a pretty famous nickname: the Schmemmys.
Not a chance.
“Shmemmys is an endearment that I say with complete love because of the fact that it starts at 2:30 (p.m.) is not something a real award show would ever do,” Kathy said. “I got up for hair and make-up around 4 (a.m.), it was still dark out. But there’s also a lot of big stars here so I’m really excited. I’m also excited to see who’s too famous to walk the red carpet. I, of course, am not.”
UPDATE: Kathy could again be a winner during that telecast then again a week later at the main Emmys. Her show My Life on the D-List got its fourth consecutive nomination for Outstanding Reality Series and will square off against Intervention, MythBusters, Dog Whipserer, Antiques Roadshow and Dirty Jobs.
Meanwhile, Kathy’s comedy special She’ll Cut a Bitch is up for outstanding variety, music or comedy special. It’s competition is Ricky Gervais: Out Of England, Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W. Bush, Kennedy Center Honors, Chris Rock’s Kill the Messenger.
After learning the news, Kathy told ET: “I know this industry isn’t supposed to be about awards, but screw you and the horse you rode in on… Seriously, I am truly honored that the Academy has recognized my special and ‘My Life on the D-list,’ specifically the episode where I was privileged enough to visit and perform at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Shout out to my one-legged GI’s.”
Good luck Kathy!
