Kathy Griffin has turned New Year’s Eve in Times Square into a night to remember for Anderson Cooper

There are certain things you can count on when it comes to watching Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage from Times Square in New York City.

Griffin will do something completely outrageous and Cooper will be mortified. Then he’ll giggle – a lot.

This will be the eighth straight year that CNN has paired the real-life friends for the gig. In past years Griffin has stripped to her bra, has simulated performing oral sex on Cooper, and told some noisy guy interrupting her on air to shut up and said ‘I don’t go to your job and knock dicks out of your mouth.’

But Cooper insists he wouldn’t have it any other way.

‘If you had tried to leave, I wouldn’t have allowed it,’ he said to Griffin during a joint interview with The New York Times.

‘I started working New Year’s Eve because I find it dreadful in New York. You can’t get a cab, and Uber is four times the normal cost. There are lines for everything. So, I volunteered to work.’

Griffin, always pushing the envelope, says: ‘I get yelled at during every commercial break.’

Corrects Cooper: ‘You get cautioned, not yelled at.’

Asked why he would put up with ‘this nonsense’ Cooper makes clear why:Because I’m genuine friends with Kathy, and she’s funny as hell … I cannot imagine doing the show without Kathy.’

Among their on air rivals each year is Ryan Seacrest who hosts ABC’s New Year’s Eve coverage each year. Cooper says Griffin is freaking obsessed’ with the American Idol host.

Retorts Griffin:Only because you think he’s a real person. And I know he’s a robot. And I will happily call him right now and tell him. Watch: Anderson is already texting an apology.’

Here are some highlights from last year:
