“Kaboom” star Thomas Dekker talks about gay and straight love scenes and going full-frontal

http://www.examiner.com/images/blog/wysiwyg/image/Thomas_Dekker_1.jpgThomas Dekker stars in director Gregg Araki latest film Kaboom and chatted about some provocative topics with Next Magazine at the film’s New York premiere.

Dekker starred on Fox’s The Sarah Connor Chronicles and had also been on NBC’s Heroes.

He left Heroes and a role that was supposed to be gay. This gave the young actor and his reps a bad rap because it seemed to some that his departure from the show was a matter of him simply not wanting to play a gay role.

That certainly is not the case since his pansexual character in Kaboom sleeps with both men and women.

“I felt it was such an honor to play a role that was neither gay nor straight,” Dekker confided.  “I hadn’t come across a feature script like that before.”

He is also not the least uptight about nudity.

“The movie opens with a full-frontal shot of me,” he said nonchalantly.  “Honestly I don’t care about nudity or sex. I find it a lot harder to do those emotional scenes than ones merely involving vanity. If I could do every photo shoot and every scene naked, I would. It would be easier.  People have less to judge when you’re naked.”

Dekker’s next role is a gay one: He plays Lance Loud, who broke ground as the openly gay son in in the 1973 reality series An American Family, in a new feature for HBO called Cinema Verite.

  1. Doesn’t sound like the guy has a problem with gay roles – especially if he’s playing Lance Loud. I’m looking forward to HBO’s Cinema Verite.

  2. Thomas Dekker was amazing as the cancer-stricken boyfriend in “My Sister’s Keeper.”

  3. I can not WAIT to see Kaboom. It looks like it’s going to be amazing. I will also be waiting for the Lance Loud role. Keep up your good work. ;)

    Tammy Ware says:

Thomas Dekkar will stay in show business most of his life, if he so wishes. He has the star quality of a young Brad Pitt in “Thelma and Louise” and a young Tom Cruise in “Risky Business”.

I’ve seen him in 3 very diverse roles. So far, he’s nothing but amazing. He plays the macho teen in “A Nightmare on Elm St.” protecting his friends against their dreams. Then, I had no idea that the cancer stricken Taylor Ambrose was Thomas Dekkar!!! His role in “Cinema Verite’” simply blew me away.

I foresee a very successful career for Thomas Dekkar. Although it’s early and he is young, I believe he can do whatever role is put in front of him, with talent!!!

  5. I’ve only seen him in The Sarah Connor Chronicles! I’m still waiting for Season 3!!! I suppose Thomas Dekker is first an opportunist in the characters he signs on for. Fortunantely (from his trailers) he seems versatile enough to do well no matter what he chooses.

  6. It doesn’t matter to me what his orientation is. He is gorgeous anyway. I’ve forced myself to watch not so good shows and movies just because he is in them. He has an unusual quality about him. His acting is believable- he is the character that he is playing and he makes you believe it. There is just something so primal yet vulnerable about him. It reads very well on camera.

  7. Thomas Dekker is a cutie. I had not realised that the attractive young actor was the same as the one that I oggled in the Sarah Connor Chronicles. It is amazing how little it takes to confuse: hair colour and length and facial hair! For sure, this young dude is going to go places in cinema if he wishes, as Tammy Ware says. I certainly hope that this is the case!

  8. I’ve heard nothing but positive things about this young guy. You can’t really say that a lot these days! A friend saw him @ ComicCon in San Diego and said he was awesome. Polite, articulate, funny. Apparently likes to talk a lot though and sometimes interrupted others….but I think we can forgive that. What is he? 23? 24? How often do you hear that one of these young Hollywood people are actually nice and actually SANE? Apparently posed for pics, autogrphed everything reasonable. Sounds like he’s a great guy. Really hope that’s true because there is such a shortage! BTW, the gay/straight thing? Kind of flamboyant @ times. I’m thinking more than likely gay…..but as so many say “should it really matter?” He’s a damn fine-lookin’ young guy though + with all the other positive stuff?? Sounds like whatever guy/gal is lucky enough to romance the dude is very lucky indeed! Until he admits it though I guess we’ll just say he’s straight but hey….whatever man…..its 2011!!! Whoever he partners with will likely be a damn lucky dude/dudette. Really wish I heard of MORE people in Hollywood that are apparently as decent as he (apparently) is. If all this is true I firmly want to say DON’T CHANGE THOMAS!!! KEEP IT REAL and STAY GROUNDED. Your doin’ great!
