Johnny Weir officially retires – will be at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia as NBC commentator

US figure skating star Johnny Weir had been so vocal about going to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi that it was a huge surprise when he didn’t even try and qualify.

Johnny was one of the biggest opponents of a boycott due to Russia’s anti-gay laws despite he himself being gay.

Turns out he will be going to Sochi after all – as a retired skater and NBC sports commentator.

‘While this law is a terrible thing that you can’t be gay publicly in Russia, I plan to be there in full support of our brothers and sisters there and not be afraid,’ he said on The Today Show this morning. ‘If I get arrested, I get arrested; if not, great, but our presence is needed.’

Of his retirement, the 29-year-old Johnny said simply: ‘I got old.’

4 Remarks

  1. I’ve never found Johnny interesting. He seems so entitled. I just don’t get it.

  2. I love Johnny and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Also, I pray for his safety during his trip to Russia.

  3. I can hardly wait to hear his commentary. Can you just imagine his “dish” of fellow skaters. Johnny is much loved in Russia and has a huge fan base there and has skated in shows there as well and he speaks Russian. He’s going to be just fine….so he’s retiring maybe Evan should as well and Plenky…

  4. Thank God NBC has chosen Johnny Weir as Commentator for Men’s and Women’s Figure Skating. As an Avid Fan of the Artistic and Athletic Sport, and Former National and World Roller Figure Skating Champion, I feel that those who will watch the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia; “The Figure Skating.” I was pleasantly relieved to experience Johnny Weir’s approach as com paired to the Non- stop rambling, criticism and need to talk almost Completely non-stop through out each Athletes performance with loud and obnoxious so called “Commentary,” leaving the viewers so annoyed because we can’t watch a single Skater”s Performance of their Short and Long Programs without constant babbling! One wants to reach into the television screen to grab the likes of Dick Button, Scot Hamilton, and now the annoying Peter Caruthers. All of the above mentioned Commentators, ruin the experience of watching any Figure Skating Championship by simply babying continually usually criticizing ad nosium. Johnny Weir brings a Refreshingly intelligent style of Commentary with a calm, ease intelligent, informed, Intelligible, smooth and non-intrusive voice that does Not Talk throughout a Skater’s Program but rather has a natural instinct of when to speak so that the viewing Public can Enjoy each Skater’s performance of their Programs and receive expertly delivered Accurate Commentary without the absolute destruction of the viewing publics ability to enjoy the experience of each and every Competitive Figure Skating Event. Especially one of the most Talented Figure Skater’s to ever Compete at the Highest level, in my humble opinion, what is and will prove to be for the Great Artistic and Athletic Talented Figure Skaters from around the world gathered for The 2014 Winter Olympics, in Sochi, Russia! PLEASE NBC and all sports channels that will cover the 2014 Winter Olympics, Allow the Millions of television viewers to actually be able to hear the music, watch and enjoy the Figure Skater’s Olympic Performances of their Short and Long Programs in their bid to become the Olympic Gold Medalist; with Intelligent, Calm, Articulate, Informed Commentary as ONLY Johnny Weir has proven Capable of delivering. Thank You NBC and Thank You Johnny Weir!
