Johnny Diaz’s book, “Beantown Cubans,” is out! Beantown Cubans (Aug. 2009)

Johnny Diaz is a gifted writer who I’m so proud to call my friend. He has juggled his job as a features and media writer for the Boston Globe with his career as an author.

His third novel, Beantown Cuban, has just been released. The previous two novels were 2007′s Boston Boys Club followed by last year’s Miami Manhunt. As a gay man who is from Miami then moved to Boston, Johnny writes about what he knows and his books are terrific reads.

Here is a synopsis of the new book: Carlos Martin is looking for friendship, familia, and finding a place to call home—even in a city where it’s almost impossible to get an authentic Cuban sandwich. Life in Beantown is a culture shock until Carlos meets Tommy Perez, a reporter who has successfully made Boston his home. Tommy quickly shows his new amigo the ropes in town and Carlos supports him when an ex-boyfriend resurfaces. During one wildly unpredictable year, Carlos embraces his newfound independence while Tommy wrestles with a romantic past that he can’t forget.

Johnny is a former staff writer for the Miami Herald and was seen more than a decade ago on MTV’s Real World: Miami when he dated one of the show’s cast members. I’ve greatly appreciated his professional support and thoughtfulness over the years and will forever cherish the incredibly fun time spent with him and Kenneth Walsh (Kennethinthe212) at the 2007 NLGJA convention in San Diego.

Good times!
