Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Lily Tomlin, Judith Light & others urge us to “Give a Damn” about LGBT youth suicide

http://www.homorazzi.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/give-a-damn-campaign-cyndi-lauper.jpgThank Good for Cyndi Lauper and her Give A Damn campaign which features people in a series of videos who really care about equality.

I want to share this newest one that is about LGBT youth suicide in which Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Lily Tomlin, Judith Light and Mae Whitman.

Mae points out that LGBT youth are four times more likely to commit suicide than their straight peers. Judith says it is not because they are LGBT but because “they feel alone and rejected.”

http://www.whatifitwereyou.org/images/Madison_Wisconsin_AIDS_awareness/we_give_a_damn_campaign.gifLily asks viewers to “imagine feeling so isolated that you start to wonder whether anyone even gives a damn whether you’re alive or dead. … It’s time to help our children and friends accept themselves and know that they are loved.”

Jesse shares that some youth are “in such agony and despair that the only way [they] think they can escape it is to end [they're] life. We all have to get involved.”

2 Remarks

  1. I am so glad they also ‘Give A Damn’ about a rarely talked about issue when it comes to the GLBT community….immigration.

The sooner our community realizes that immigration is also a gay issue the quicker, at least I hope, we will be able to pass the Uniting American Families Act(UAFA. As we speak, there are thousands of GLBT American citizens unable to sponsor their foreign born spouse. My partner and I have been together for almost 10 years and have almost run out of options. No one should have to choose between the man or woman they love and the country they love.

Kudo’s to Cyndi for bringing attention to this important yet ignored issue.

  2. I agree with FAEN. My partner and I have been together for many years now, but had to spend the last one apart from each other, simply because we cannot afford any way around the borders that have “legally” been put up in front of our faces by the US government. The U.S. citizen can’t even sponsor his OWN partner in the eyes of HIS government.

There are still some horribly life destroying laws on the books in the U.S. today, and UAFA would be one to way to finally start the healing. Thanks Cyndi, for making the issue a little more well known! And, please: Everybody who’s reading this, go lobby your lawmakers!
