Jennifer Holliday defends her decision to perform at Inauguration Day concert at Lincoln Memorial

Jennifer Holliday is defending her controversial decision to sing at an Inauguration Day concert.

‘It brought a lot of threats from people already saying I’ll never work again,’ Holliday tells The New York Times.

‘If that’s what America has come to, where we all hate and bully people, there’s no more freedom of speech.

‘I know everybody hates me now, but that shows we are all just hateful people now — we don’t even want to work together.’

Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration Committee had trouble landing famous names for inauguration events. But they were able to land the Tony and Grammy award winning Holliday for the Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial.

The original star of Dreamgirls, Holliday returned to Broadway last year as one of the stars of The Color Purple.

Holliday has had many career and personal ups and downs over the past three decades but has maintained a solid gay following and performed at Pride events.

Many fans have taken to social media to bash her.

‘If it’s the end of everything for me, then it has to be the end of everything for me,’ she says.

‘I would hope that’s not how it ends up, but right now I would like to be a part of a welcoming part of America. If we’re only going to let Trump be the face of America, I say let’s not let him be the only face of America — someone else could stand and show a light of love or hope or forgiveness.’

Holliday’s spokesman had said Friday that his client had not made up her mind but the singer sounded certain in her conversation with The Times.

‘I voted for Mrs. Clinton, and they knew that,’ she said of the Trump committee. ‘If someone wants me to sing a national anthem or something, we think about America, and we go.’

7 Remarks

  1. My real problem is the fact that the inauguration will be at the Lincoln Memorial. As far as performers go, I could care less because I won’t be watching. I’d rather stick pins in my eyes.

  2. “And I’m Telling You…you shouldn’t be goin”

  3. applaud her for this
    i get it
but i would rather sow what we preach- tolerance-peace-acceptance and celebrate a tradition of peaceful transition then all the sour grapes BS going on now…. i mean look up the very definition of bigot then reflect on actions and reactions….. spent months calling him that and we have become exactly what we accused him of being

so go on lady–sing your heart out… for the people….. spread some love lord knows we need it

  4. Whatever you have to tell yourself Aunt Jemima.

Lapse in judgment = wanting to avoid the rainbow shitstorm.

  6. @FAEN-what’s with the racial slur against Jennifer Holliday? Just because someone doesn’t do what you think is right doesn’t mean they deserve to have racist or derogatory remarks directed at them. I thought you were better than that. You disappoint.
