Jason Ritter’s new conspiracy thriller series “The Event” premieres on NBC tonight!
Since his terrific CBS sitcom The Class was canceled a few years back (Jesse Tyler Ferguson was a castmate), Jason Ritter had been busy making a string of independent movies including Peter and Vandy, Good Dick and The Dry Land.
He wanted to return to series television but wanted it to be the right project which turned out to be the NBC conspiracy thriller The Event which premieres tonight at 9 p.m.
“This pilot season for some reason I was very careful about what I auditioned for because I’d really enjoyed doing independent film the last couple of years,” Jason told a group of us during the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour. “If a show goes, you can be on it for quite awhile and so I wanted to make sure if I was auditioning for something, even at that first step, that if I were to be on the show for seven years that I would be excited every single day to come to work. It’s a strange thing because obviously you’re always grateful to have a job as an actor but I’ve talked to other actors who have been grateful their success but have also felt artistically kind of stymied on certain shows.”
Jason plays Sean Walker, a man whose investigation into the sudden and mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend leads him into one of the biggest cover-ups in U.S. history. The Event also stars Blair Underwood and ER alum Laura Innes.
So what was it about his character that made him commit?
“I think people enjoy when characters are developed fully and you know their history and you know why they react to certain things the way they do,” Jason said. “It’s all completely thought out psychologically why he does the things he does.”
