Of course I’m really talking about actor Larry Hagman who last night at The Magic Castle in Hollywood reunited with Mary Crosby, the actress whose character shot dastardly J.R. Ewingon Dallas back in 1980 in TVs first great cliffhanger.

Photographer Brian Putnam snapped the two together last night after a cabaret performance by Mary’s mother, Kathryn Crosby.

Mary’s father, of course, was Bing Crosby and Kathryn’s show was a tribute to the late, great crooner.

The Who Shot J.R. episode of Dallas was titled A House Divided and was broadcast on March 21, 1980. Viewers had to wait all summer, and most of the autumn because of a Hollywood actors’ strike (and Hagman’s own holdout), to learn whether J.R. would survive, and which of his many enemies was responsible.

Betting parlors worldwide took bets as to which one of the 10 or so principal characters had actually pulled the trigger.

Ultimately, the person who pulled the trigger was revealed to be Kristin Shepard (Crosby) in the
“Who Done It?” episode which aired on November 21, 1980. Kristin was J.R.’s scheming sister-in-law and mistress, who shot him in a fit of anger. J.R. didn’t press charges as Kristin claimed she was pregnant with his child as a result of their affair.

It was, at the time, the highest rated television episode in US history.

2 Remarks

  1. As the late Paul Harvey would say, “…and now the rest of the story…”

Mary Martin was one of Broadway’s brightest lights. She did spend some time in Hollywood, however, long enough to make nine films. Most of them were totally forgettable, but she was lucky enough to land at Paramount and that would pair her with that studio’s biggest star, Bing Crosby. Bing would be impressed enough to offer her a regular spot on the Kraft Music Hall.

When Bing’s daughter was trying to establish herself in showbusiness, she was hired for a recurring role on Dallas. This brought the family relationship full circle since the show’s main protagonist was portrayed by Larry Hagman – the oldest child of Mary Martin.

  2. I just enjoy saying WHO SHOT J.R.?
