It’s another gold record – the 52nd – for Streisand

At the age of 72, Barbra Streisand is still like buttah when it comes to selling albums.

The Recording Industry Association of America announced on Friday that Streisand’s latest album, Partners, has been certified gold meaning it has sold more than 500,000 copies.

This marks the 52nd gold record for Streisand whose first album was released 50 years ago last month.

No other female artist has achieved as many gold records as Streisand.

‘Barbra is the most recognized female in the history of Gold and Platinum album awards,’ RIAA Chairman & CEO Cary Sherman said in a statement. ‘What an incredible feat. It’s no surprise that she’s returning to the top of the charts and earned yet another Gold album.’

Partners is an album of duets that debuted at the top of the Billboard sales chart in September. That achievement made Streisand the first artist in history to have a number one album in six consecutive decades.

Among those joining the singing legend on the album are Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Babyface, Jason Gould, Josh Groban, Billy Joel, John Legend, John Mayer, Lionel Richie, Blake Shelton, and Stevie Wonder.

Partners also includes a virtual duet with the late Elvis Presley.

  1. Greg:
Thanks so much for running this Barbra story on your great site. Many of the younger (and older) gay blogs do not really pay that much attention to Barbra and her extraordinary career. Unfortunately, many gays do not believe that Barbra is relevant anymore. Many of us older fans truly appreciate your keeping us and your readers informed.

I would only quibble about one slight blurb in your story. You say “This marks the 52nd gold record for Streisand whose first album was released 50 years ago last month”. Actually her first album was released in 1963 not 1964 so really it is 51 years ago. The 50th anniversary is that she actually had her first #1 album People)in Oct 1964, making it 50 solid years between #1 albums!

Thankfully you do mention that she has had a #1 album in each of the last six decades. Quite a record that could possibility never be surpassed.

I am quite happy with “Partners” it is a solid effort with certain cuts being better than others but there is something solid for everyone. Barbra put a lot of effort into these vocals and they are really terrific. She sounds great. However….I think that over the next few years we will see releases from the vaults and more compilations of stuff already recorded, such as a greatest hits package.

So, what I am saying…and many will disagree… I think that “Partners” should be her last full new studio album and she should go out on top. That does not mean that she couldn’t record a new song here and there…

Regarding the possibility of BJS doing a “Partners” sessions with all females just does not seem that it would truly appeal to her and picking the songs might be very difficult.

We may have a Gypsy movie and CD to look forward to and that would be great but something deep down tells me that the Gypsy project will not materialize and perhaps it is for the best. She would be under a major microscope if it did and it could all backfire. Let her direct some films that she is not in and take some important supporting rolls is a few very prestigious projects…..

I am sure she will continue to surprise us as she has for so many years. Who knows…a seventh decade of #1s could happen…

Thanks again Greg for ALL your hard work!

  2. I’ll add that I greatly appreciate your coverage of Barbra Streisand as well. She is my favorite female artist and I’ve been following her career since the late 1960′s. Thanks, Greg!
