“I Love Lucy” Friday: The girls bake bread and churn butter to win bet with boys in “Pioneer Women”

http://www.johnmariani.com/archive/2005/050626/photoweek120.jpgThere aren’t too many season one episodes of I Love Lucy that rank among my favorites because the show really got better and better with each passing season.

But there were some gems in that first season like this one: Pioneer Women. The girls bet the boys that they can last longer living like it’s 1900 with no modern conveniences. This means baking your own bread. Lucy misreads the cookbooks thinking it says 13 cakes of yeast instead of THREE.
Each time she returns from churning butter with Ethel, the dough has risen to some crazy size. My favorite line is when Lucy says “It’s a happy little loaf isn’t it?,”  as she forcefully kneads the growing mound of dough.

Of course, once baked, the loaf is just out of control.

  2. While very funny, the loaf also gets heavier with each rising. This is a mistake as the dough grows in size not weight. Yeast makes gas pockets in the bread and causes the dough to rise. If anything the gas in the bread may make is slightly lighter. If the yeast gas is lighter than air.
