How “Brady Bunch” TV dad Robert Reed shaped the views of Christopher Knight about gays

Robert Reed, of course, is one of the most popular TV dads of all time.

But it was not known to most viewers of The Brady Bunch that the handsome actor  was gay.

But the young actors who played his and Florence Henderson’s six children on the show did eventually know.

One of them, Christopher Knight, said this week that he could not have asked for a better role model.

Reed died in 1992 at the age of 59 and Knight told HuffPost Live this week that he ‘was as good or better a father figure than my own dad.’

He also called the late actor his ‘personal hero.’

‘I learned very early that if that was what gay was, it has no measure in the ability of somebody to be a fine representation of a good human being,’ Knight said.

‘It made me more willing to be accepting and less willing to hear other voices.’

Knight, now 56, played middle son Peter Brady on the show which ran as a sitcom from 1969-74, was a Saturday morning cartoon series for awhile and returned as a short-lived variety series, two TV movies and finally as a short-lived one-hour dramedy.

Reed never came out publicly. His sexuality became known after his death from colon cancer when it was revealed that he was HIV-positive.

One Remark

  1. Another example of why its important to live outside the closet. Straight people need to be able to see examples of homosexuals that they can relate to. Not just the stereotypes that the media pushes.
