Honey Boo Boo’s “Uncle Poodle” is HIV positive and his ex was sent to prison for infecting him

I had never seen a single episode of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo until New Year’s Day when I somehow got sucked in and before I knew it, had watched six episodes back-to-back.

It’s not my usual cup of tea for the truth was, I liked this family!

What I didn’t know then is that Honey Boo Boo’s beloved gay Uncle Poodle is HIV positive.

His real name is Lee Thompson and he recently shared the news that he was infected with the HIV virus by his ex-boyfriend who has been sent to prison because of it.

‘I knew it had been my boyfriend who infected me,’ Thompson tells ‘I later learned he had been HIV positive and was not taking medication and had not bothered to tell me about it. I was advised that I should press charges and, hesitantly, I did. It was the right thing to do.’

The boyfriend is now serving a five-year prison sentence.

‘I would have been cool with his HIV status if he had been honest,’ Thompson says. ‘I don’t have an issue with the disease. I would have known how to protect myself.’

Thompson regularly had himself checked for HIV. He was negative in March 2012 but when he had a test two months later, it came back positive.

He now is on a crusade to encourage others to practice safe sex.

Those who do not ‘are damn fools! They are playing Russian roulette; they are playing with their lives and that of their sexual partners.’

3 Remarks

  1. Hes a brave man to come out to his family in the first place. One of the redeeming factors of this show is that “Uncle Poodle” is treated just like evry other member of the family. To come out publicly as HIV+ is very brave indeed. I wish him nothing but health and happiness.

  2. I can’t stand Honey Boo Boo but that being said it is really brave of him to publicly say that he’s HIV+. My wish for him is to have good health and to be able to find happiness.

  3. I would have known how to protect myself? Anyone who has sex, gay or straight, should know how to protect themselves. If he was being checked for HIV regularly there was no reason for him not to know how.
