Happy Birthday to Phoebe Snow!
I know I featured Phoebe Snow just a few days ago in the Lunch Break Video feature but I didn’t realize then that her birthday was coming up: she turns 55 years old today!
I think her voice and her talent is such a unique treasure and I’m glad she’s still out there performing even though it has been an almost unbearably difficult time following the death last year of her daughter Valerie.
We chatted last fall when Miss Snow was releasing a new album and had performed her brilliant hit Something Real in the movie Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom.
In 1975, shortly after releasing one of the most acclaimed debut albums of the era, Snow gave birth to Valerie who was born severely brain injured. She was told her child would not live very long, be extremely disabled and should be placed in a residential faclilty.
“She came home with me and that’s where she lived for 31 years,” she said. “Back then, the music industry saw that as a liability. But my daughter was the most amazing person.”
