Happy birthday to Doris Day who turns 96 today!

We don’t see Doris Day in public much anymore but she seems to be having a happy life in Carmel where she has lived for many years.

But the great film, television and recording star surfaced in her hometown for a weekend of festivities for her 96th birthday which is today. The bash served as a fundraiser for her Doris Day Animal Foundation.

She was a huge movie star (Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, The Pajama Game, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lullaby of Broadway), a huge TV star (The Doris Day Show) and a huge recording star (Secret Love, Que Sera, Sera).

Miss Day all but retired from showbiz in the mid-70s but did re-emerge in the 80s to host the show Doris Day and Friends and in 1989 was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award at the Golden Globe Awards.

She also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2006. No doubt she would receive an honorary Academy Award for her film career if she would agree to attend the ceremony which is not likely.

Well, que sera, sera.

    Trippy Trellis says:

I like Doris Day and love her in a couple of movies, including my favorite Hitchcock of all: “The Man Who Knew Too Much”. That said, she wasn’t a huge star, she was the BIGGEST female star of all time. She was the female equivalent of John Wayne. Today’s young- anyone under 40- have no idea of the magnitude of Doris Day’s stardom.

  2. Very true, Trippy. To this day, she is the top female box office draw in movie history.
