Happy Birthday to Delta Burke!
The divine Delta Burke turns 53 today!
This deliciously talented actress, best known for her classic portrayal of Suzanne Sugarbaker during the first five seasons on Designing Women, has been an inspiration to many for speaking candidly about her battles with depression and weight.
It was her behind-the-scenes struggles that influenced the metamorphosis of Suzanne on-screen and helped to mold what I think is one of the most brilliant comic creations in the history of television. It is one of those rare times when it was the perfect meeting of actress and character and as Delta changed, so did Suzanne.
I’ve remained a fan of Delta’s since the show and she has done some great stuff. Among my faves was her portrayal of Cherry Cherry during the second season of Popular. She had a recurring role on Boston Legal and one-season runs of the sitcoms on three different networks: Delta on ABC, DAG on NBC and Women of the House on CBS, the latter a spinoff that had her once again playing Suzanne.
Delta has also triumphed on Broadway in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Steel Magnolias and was a smash in the touring production of Southern Baptist Sissies and in the indie movie fave Sordid Lives. She was to be a part of Sordid Lives: The Series but had to pull out to get treatment for her depression because her medications stopped working.
Hope she is feeling better now and that we will see her back on stage or screen very soon!
