Happy 91st birthday to comedy legend Rose Marie!

Rose Marie is a living legend and one of the few people who can say they have been in show business for more than 85 years.

One of my absolutely all-time favorite TV shows is The Dick Van Dyke Show which ran for five brilliant seasons in the 1960s.

Her Sally Rogers character was a comedy writer who worked with Van Dyke’s Rob Petrie and Morey Amsterdam’s Buddy Sorrell on a TV show.

Sally wasn’t not just one of the girls. Where Mary Tyler Moore’s Laura Petrie was a wife and mother like most female characters were at that time, Sally was a professional comedy writer who did not defer to her male writing partners.

“I was the first women’s libber. I worked on an equal basis with the guys and a lot of people have told me that if it wasn’t for [Sally], they wouldn’t be able to do what they’re doing. And a lot of girls have become writers. It makes me very proud,” she told me when we chatted in 2010.

The Dick Van Dyke Show is by far her most famous role but it certainly wasn’t her first or last. She broke into showbiz as Baby Rose. After the classic 1961`-66 sitcom left the air, she went on to become a regular on The Doris Day Show and appeared for many years as a panelist on Hollywood Squares delivering well-timed barbs. She also enjoyed tremendous success with a touring stage show called 4 Girls 4 with Mary Martin, Helen O’Connell and Margaret Whiting.

5 Remarks

  1. She was 24K in the golden age of television. Thanks for these clips.

  2. Happy Birthday to a great lady!

  3. I loved “Sally” on the Dick Van Dyke show. She was a great addition to “the Doris Day show”. It was a mistake to let her go from that show. It seemed to flounder without her. She and Doris reminded me of Lucy and Ethel. Always something was going on.

  4. Happy Birthday Rose Marie!

You will always be Sally to me! As a young child, I would wait for the Dick Van Dyke show and waiting for Sassy Sally, to steal the scene! Happy Birthday dear Lady, much health and happiness to you.
    Big hug
