Happy 50th Birthday to Greg Louganis!
The great diving legend (four Olympic gold medals and one silver medal) is a half century young today. He is such an inspiration and authored one of the most moving memoirs I’ve ever read: Breaking the Surface. I read it in the mid-90s and was so deeply moved and inspired by his honesty about being gay, abusive boyfriends, a distant father, his low self-esteem despite being the very best in his sport and about living with HIV.
He is a true survivor.
Greg has been living with HIV for decades and, thankfully, has remained healthy and productive and devastatingly handsome. I met him last June for the first time and he was so relaxed and down to Earth and I was glad to be able to tell him how much his book meant to me at a time that I really needed it. I hope he is having a wonderful birthday.
Here are some photos of Greg through the years:

Greg Louganis is my all-time favorite athlete. I had watched him dive since the 80s when I was 12 years old in Hong Kong, just starting out in my swimming team + springboard diving team. He’s an inspiration for me on all levels – his spirit in competing, strength in times of adversity, sensitivity, and no doubt he’s the a gorgeous human being.

I watched Greg Louganis on TV in Beijing during the 1984 Olympics. He was so handsome and graceful that I couldn’t help falling in love with him. In fact, all the Chinese girls and women were crazy about Greg Louganis then and consider him a Greek God.
After I came to US later on and learned that Greg Louganis is guy and has AIDS, I just prayed that he would remain healthy, handsome and has a fulfilled life. I am very happy that to this day Greg Louganis is still gorgeous, happy, and loved by many people. I hope that Greg Louganis knows that we Chinese girls and women love and adore you forever. God bless Greg Louganis!
