‘Growing Pains’ dad Alan Thicke dies at the age of 69 – suffered heart attack while playing hockey with son

Shocked by this very sad news. Growing Pains star Alan Thicke died today of a heart attack at the age of 69.

He had been playing hockey this afternoon in Burbank with his 19-year-old son Carter. He is also the father of singer Robin Thicke.

Growing Pains aired on ABC for seven seasons, from 1985 to 1992. ‘

Thicke was Jason Seaver who was a psychiatrist who works from home. Joanna Kerns portrayed his wife and Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller and Ashley Johnson were their kids.

In the show’s final season, Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio joined the cast as a homeless teen who moves in with the family.

In 2012, Thicke publicly disagreed with Cameron’s comments that homosexuality is ‘detrimental,’ ‘unnatural’ and ‘ultimately destructive.’

Thicke took to Twitter and joked: ‘I love Kirk but I may have to spank him…’tho not in a gay way!’

But he wanted his one-time TV son to know that he still cared about him.

‘Kirk took quite a beating the last couple of weeks,’ Thicke said in an interview that year with The Six Pack.

‘He and I were in touch over all of [the controversy]. Basically I told him I wanted to stay out of the conversation and I’d throw in a few jokes, he should understand where I was coming from and that I respect his right to say whatever he feels. I just didn’t happen to agree with him.. I also believe in fossils and dinosaurs!’

Others did not see it as a joking matter.

‘I was shocked and somewhat frightened by all of the fallout from the remarks from Kirk on Piers Morgan,’ Thicke said.

‘I was astonished at all the hate mongering venom spewing vitriol that I saw.’

He saw ugliness from both pro-gay and anti-gay forces for getting involved in the controversy.

‘It wasn’t only the incredibly hypocritical Christian wing who was calling me names, really vicious mean ugly kind of commentary, for my support of the gay and lesbian community,’ Thicke said.

‘On the other hand, the gay and lesbian community attacking Kirk and all evangelicals and people of faith, that wasn’t right. I was quite surprised at the level of anger and meanness on both sides.’

Thicke is survived by his wife Tanya Callau and his three sons, famed singer Robin Thicke, Brennan Thicke and Carter Thicke.

One Remark

  1. This is a shocker! I always found Alan Thick very likeable. He seemed like a pretty decent and intelligent guy. RIP, Alan. You will be missed.
