Greg in the Afternoon: A McCain who supports gay marriage; no gay weddings in Queen Mum home

********** Well, this is nice. Would’ve been even nicer before the Nov. 4 election which passed Prop. 8 but better late than never. Meghan McCain, daughter of 2008 presidential candidate John McCain, went on CNN’s Larry King Live last night and said she supports same-sex marriage and is pro-choice.

She obviously won’t be called on to speak at any Republican Party events since the party platform has been against those rights – especially its Christian conservative base.

Miss McCain said to King: “We have a very big generation gap between me and my father. I was raised in an open-minded home. I was raised a Christian, but I was raised open- minded Christian — one to accept people, love people, not pass judgment. And that’s the kind of place I was raised. It’s how I lived my life. I believe in gay marriage. I believe in many things socially. I personally am pro-life, but I’m not going to judge someone that’s pro-choice. It is not my place to judge other people and what they do with their body.”

Like this girl. Like her a lot!

********** I was always fascinated by Britain’s Queen Mum. First of all, I loved her official title: Her Magesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. I like how she managed to have the word queen in there twice! She was a very popular queen when her husband, King George VI, reigned and was just in her 50s when he died in 1952. Her daughter, Elizabeth, became Queen of England and continues to reign to this day. But The Queen Mother stayed high-profile until she died in 2002 at the age of 101. I understand that she was gay-friendly throughout her life having many gay friends and sevants. So it is disconcerting to read on Towleroad.com that her home in Scotland, where she would often vacation, is now a popular wedding venue but does not allow same-sex marriages!

The Daily Mail newspaper quotes David Allison, spokesman for gay activist group Outrage, as saying: “This seems even more ridiculous given that The Queen Mother surrounded herself with gay people – including ‘Backstairs’ Billy Tallon (her devoted servant). Doing this at the Queen Mother’s old residence is particularly odd. She had no problem with gay people – quite the opposite.”
