Gold medalist Matthew Mitcham retires from diving
Matthew Mitcham will always be a hero to me for not only having the guts to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as an openly gay man, but to also come away as a gold medalist.
Earlier today, Matthew announced that he is retiring from his sport.
He wrote on Facebook: It’s official: I have decided to finally retire after a looooooooong but very rewarding diving career. So much gratitude to my long suffering partner Lachlan, Chava, NSWIS, DA, family, friends and all you friends I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet! I remember the support I got when I came out before my Olympic debut in 2008 and it helped me to keep sharing my story just as candidly. So, it’s Peace Out to my diving career and a big Heeeeeeey to the rest of my media and entertainment and everything else career!
Matthew later posted this message on Facebook: Holy mackerel, what an epic day. But very rewarding, and therapeutic, and validating. Lots of people had lots of lovely things to say which was very sweet. I haven’t had time to scratch myself today but I can’t wait to read all your wonderful messages tomorrow. You guys have made me feel very special, thank you
