GMA’s Robin Roberts comes out publicly!

Congratulations to Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts for coming out publicly.

Robin acknowledged girlfriend Amber Laign in a Facebook post Sunday about how a year ago, she reached a critical milestone of 100 days post blood marrow transplant.

‘At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude. I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann, for being my donor and giving me the gift of life. I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together. I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes for my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold. On this last Sunday of 2013 I encourage you to reflect on what you are grateful for too. Wishing you a Healthy and Happy New Year. Peace, love, and blessings to all..XO”

No, we’re not surprised (as some of you will no doubt want to comment – don’t do it please!) but we’re thrilled because this is someone in people’s living rooms every morning.

Some of the fans of the number one network morning show might even watch Duck Dynasty! It’s important for them to know that when Phil Robertson says all those dreadful things about gays, and those ignorant things about blacks, he’s talking about the outstanding Robin Roberts.

GLAAD’s Wilson Cruz remarked on the significance of this particular coming out: “Robin’s courage continues to be unwavering, and today she has inspired countless young LGBT people and, in particular, LGBT people of color — especially LGBT women of color — who can now see a reflection of themselves on America’s most-watched morning show. As one of the nation’s most-trusted journalists, as well as a top athlete, Robin is also helping millions of viewers to better understand the rich diversity of the LGBT community.”

2 Remarks

  1. As a former faithful watcher of TODAY (until their horrible treatment of Ann Curry), I am proud to see Robin Roberts come out. While her sexuality does not matter, it is a major set forward for all LGBT people. I will continue to watch GMA not because Robin is out, but because she is go great at what she does. Truly, a remarkable woman.

  2. As long as she is happy…
