GLAAD Media Awards: President Bill Clinton accepts “Agent of Change” award from daughter Chelsea

Last night’s GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles were completely sold out and it’s a pretty good guess that the reason why was the appearance of former President Bill Clinton.

He was the recipient of the Agent of Change Award for his support of the LGBT community and recognition that DOMA, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional and should be struck down.

Clinton did not mention in his speech that he was the one who signed DOMA into law but he made clear how he feels about it today: ‘I want to keep working on this until not only DOMA is no longer the law of the land, but until all people, no matter where they live, can marry the people they love. I believe you will win the DOMA fight, and I think you will win the constitutional right to marry. If not tomorrow, then the next day or the next day.’

Clinton was introduced by movie honcho Harvey Weinstein and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence who managed, adorably, to mangle Clinton’s name a bit. After his speech, Chelsea Clinton made a surprise appearance to present her dad with the actual award.

While it was he who received the Agent of Change Award, Clinton said the staff of GLAAD and other LGBT activists were the true agents of change.

‘You have made this a better, a more interesting and a more well-prepared country for the future’

2 Remarks

  1. I support President Clinton for many reason but I don’t feel he deserves a GLAAD award. There was no need to sign DOMA. And yet he did it anyway, quietly, in the night, causing havoc and pain in our lives. Has he even sincerely apologized?

  2. Shame on GlAAD for honoring bill clinton with an award, who will receive a GLAAD award next… Anita Bryant ?

Signing the most bigoted LGBT legislation into law and now receiving an award for gay rights is shameful to say the least. I am stunned that the most anti gay rights president has received a gay rights award. This is a very sad day for the LGBT community
