GLAAD Media Awards: Caitlyn Jenner and Diane Sawyer honored for groundbreaking ’20/20′ interview
Last night at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City, Nashville star Connie Britton presented the award for Outstanding TV Journalism – Newsmagazine to 20/20 for Bruce Jenner: The Interview.
Diane Sawyer, Caitlyn Jenner, and David Sloan, senior executive producer, accepted on behalf of the show.
It was back in April 2015 when the Olympic legend still known then as Bruce Jenner shared with Sawyer that he identified as a woman and planned to publicly transition and live life authentically.
That was more than a month before the world was re-introduced to Jenner as Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair.
During the Sawyer interview, Jenner’s conservative politics seemed a minor part of the story. That part has grown and even dominated the discussion of Jenner during this election season.
But the groundbreaking interview shined the spotlight on issues facing the transgender community, highlighted the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation, and provided viewers with online educational resources.
The special drew huge ratings, with 16.9 million viewers tuning in (ultimately reaching 22 million by week’s end), and it also sparked dialogue on social media, with 972,000 tweets largely supportive of Jenner.

“Um . . . um . . . um . . .”
I do wish that people would learn how to speak and refrain from peppering their sentences with words such as “um” . . . “like” . . . “ya know” . . . etc.
Not only is it annoying, it is also a sad reflection of both our education system and the negative impact of negative social media in today’s world.
K. Martinez says:
Sorry, but this article is incomplete without a comment from FAEN. Where’s FAEN?
Joe says:
It seems incomplete since no one falsely accused me of being anti-trans, let alone no Faen!
K. Martinez says:
Hey Joe, if you’re directing that at me, I can’t say I remember doing that. But if I did, I sincerely apologize.
Joe says:
K., no apologies are necessary, but I appreciate you doing so. What I tried to do as a joke left a lot of people thinking I was someone that I am not…and that made me sad. Then, the more I tried to clarify things, it seemed like even more people came on here and accused me of being trans-phobic. I belong to other message boards and have been doing a lot of standing up for people over these stupid bathroom laws. Once again, I just hate the Kardashians & Jenners. I’m Kardashaiin/Jenner-phobic, and that’s all. Have a great day!
FAEN says:
@Joe-I am no fan of Caitlyn as you know. I admonished you for your comment because you insisted on using the incorrect pronoun which is, according to trans Americans, insulting and a tactic anti trans right wingers use. I hope at some point you understand that.
FAEN says:
@Joe-I don’t believe you are transphobic but IMO your joke went awry.
Joe says:
Faen, with all due respect, I was taken to task over the first photo of Caitlyn (or as I like to call her Jenny) Jenner as a woman because all I said was “gag* and “upchuck.” Without explaining that I was anti-Kardashian/Jenner, the joke absoluely went awry. I never called Bruce her or Caitlyn him. All this seems so unnecessary because all I tried to do was joke a little bit, but it blew up in my face. Nevertheless, I am not phobic anything, but especially against those who have walked similar brutal paths as I have. I actually do have a good sense of humor. It’s just hard to convey it on here, and you have no idea how badly I feel when people criticize me for something I am not. Thanks for talking to me about it though. Appreciated!
Joe says:
When all is said and done, I have always considered you, Faen and K., to be my friends. XO It seems we comment the most on Greg’s articles.
FAEN says:
It doesn’t matter how many awards you give her GLAAD, come November Republican hypocrite Caitlyn Jenner will vote for Donald Trump and for Republicans in the House and Senate. The VERY people that push anti gay and anti trans laws.
For fuck sake Caitlyn, do better.
FAEN says:
@Joe-No worries, all water under the bridge. I admit I can be a tad overly sensitive and I agree, it can be difficult to convey humor on line at times. Thank you for talking to me about it as well. It explained it all. Peace
