Gerald McCullouch guests on 150th episode of “Bones” tonight – shares details of real-life Las Vegas drama!

Regular readers of Greg In Hollywood know that I am crazy about actor Gerald McCullouch (not scary crazy, I just think he’s really swell). So I’m happy to put out the word that the star of Bear City and Bear City 2 is guest starring on a special episode of FOX’s Bones tonight.

It’s the show’s 150th episode and the other guest star is also a big Greg In Hollywood fave: Cyndi Lauper!

Be sure and tune in!

*****************

And speaking of Gerald, he has forwarded a column to me that he wrote about a really disturbing episode that happened to he and his boyfriend, Paul Backlund, in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay’s The Four Seasons.

They were celebrating their anniversary and rough housing a little bit as they got out of their taxi. When security found out they were a couple, they were arrested for domestic violence!

Here are some excepts from the column:

Paul and I were gripped at our triceps and pulled away from each other. We were told that if we were boyfriends, then our actions were regarded as Domestic Violence. We were assertively escorted away from the entrance of the Four Seasons and through the Mandalay Bay Casino.

Paul and I were both frozen with disbelief. I stated multiple times that there was no need for concern, that Paul and I weren’t engaged in any sort of conflict, that we fly back to LA in the afternoon and want to get back to our room to get some sleep. With each affirmation of our relationship the tension seemed to build between us and the three security guards escorting us through the casino and it’s back hallways towards the main security office and holding area.

We were kept separate from each other. I was given no further explanation of what was happening. Approximately two hours later, a Las Vegas Police Officer arrived and arrested both Paul and I for domestic violence.
Over the next 16 hours I trudged amongst the arrested mob from holding area to booking area where personal items and cell phones and layers of clothing were taken, to another holding area where cursory health exams were given – both mental and physical – and statements were taken, to long term holding cells – very long term – to a payment cubicle where I posted my bail of $3,500, to a holding cell for those about to be released, to being released into the streets of downtown Las Vegas. As Paul and I were charged with Domestic Violence we were kept separate and he was released about two hours after me so his journey was 18 hours. Happy anniversary.

During my 16 hours in jail I learned that, by Nevada State law, all Domestic Violence complaints result in arrest. And a mandatory jail stay of at least 12 hours. No questions asked. So once Robert Lake and the other security guards knowingly decided to label Paul’s and my actions as Domestic Violence they were all very aware that neither Paul nor I would be returning to our hotel room or be able to make our flight back to LA or have much ability to enjoy our anniversary any further.

5 Remarks

  1. First off: I believe the Mandalay Bay Hotel security behaved badly once they discovered they were a gay couple and then pounced on the opportunity to make life miserable for a while for the both of them. Shame on them! That said. How much of a spectacle were these two making of themselves with there “rough housing” for security to have to intervene and see if things are OK? Seriously..”flat tires & charlie horses”? What are we, 13 years old? You’re suppose to be two grown adult men, act like it. Geez!

  2. Small quibble but “Bones” is on FOX. “Castle” is on ABC. I wanna make sure everyone tunes into the right station!

  3. That is sad and uncalled for what happened at Mandalay Bay Hotel. I’ll remember never to book that hotel next time I’m in Las Vegas and the LGBT community should stand together and boycott this hotel.

  4. Considering the huge variety of people that flock to Las Vegas, it doesn’t surprise me that they have standard procedures for domestic violence situations. That they treat all domestic situations the same-gay or straight-is a compliment to the LGBT community. We want to be treated the same-guess what?

GREG- I am repeating my compliment because I forgot to say “the same” in my second sentence. It completely changes what I have to say, I believe, so I’d appreciate your deleting the first.

    Thanks!!!

  5. Greg may I correct a couple of pronoun errors? You say “……a really disturbing episode that happened to he and his boyfriend….” As strange as it sounds to the ear, the correct usage would be “him and his boyfriend.”

But don’t feel bad! Gerald McCullouch erred when he said “Approximately two hours later, a Las Vegas Police Officer arrived and arrested both Paul and I for domestic violence.”. The correct usage here would be “…..arrested both Paul and me….”.

Do you want to know an easy way to figure out correct pronouns? Take the other person out of the sentence and see how it reads. So, for example, Gerald would not say “….arrested I for domestic violence.” And you wouldn’t say “……a disturbing episode that happened to he…”

    Great column!
