Friday Music Video: Vicki Lawrence sings her number one hit “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”

Georgia is on our minds big time today and will be for quite some time with recounts and runoffs.

It made me the think of an old pop song that was a huge hit in the 1970s for Vicki Lawrence who younger generations may know only as Thelma Harper on the long-running sitcom Mama’s Family. Miss Lawrence, of course, originated the character on The Carol Burnett Show which she appeared on for more than a decade and won an Emmy for.

This was her only hit song!

One Remark

  1. The song was originally offered to Cher, but Sonny turned it down, fearing it would offend their southern TV audience. The songwriter of “Georgia” was married to Vicki, had her record it, and the rest as they say…

Cher has said she wants to do a country album, and if she does, I hope a cover of “Georgia” is on it!

    Cheers, Rick
