Friday Morning Man: Ethan Hawke!

http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2007/holiday/111507_hawke_400X400.jpgI watched Ethan Hawke on Tavis Smiley’s show the other night and he talked about how he didn’t realize when he burst onto the scene at the age of 18 in Dead Poet’s Society how rare it is to be in truly great films.

He gave the impression that he hadn’t been in very many and as he spoke, I immediately started thinking of all these terrific films Ethan had been in including Oscar nominated performance in Training Day as well as the awesome Reality Bites and the wonderful Before Sunrise and its 2004 follow-up Before Sunset.

There’s also the terrific When the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Snow Falling on Cedars, Assault on Precinct 13, the remake of Great Expectations and a really interesting indie called Tape with former wife Uma Thurman.

His latest film is the well-reviewed Brooklyn’s Finest in which he co-stars with Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes.

Ethan has also thrived on stage earning a Tony nomination for the play The Coast of Utopia. He is also a successful writer whose novel The Hottest State was made into a feature film in which he appeared and he also shared an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of Before Sunset.

2 Remarks

  1. I was in NYC years ago for a friends wedding. After all the festivities were done the next day all the visitors decided to go sight seeing. We’re all on the subway, they’re chatting away and I look towards the back and see someone sitting there with a ball cap pulled down. For some reason, he looked up and I thought “Wow, that looks like Ethan Hawke” I just looked at him and mouthed the words “Ethan Hawke?” and he just smiled an put a finger to his lips. Three stops later, he got off the subway and just turned and looked at me and winked. I told my friends after he had got off and they were yelling “Well, why didn’t you tell us when he was ON the subway?” Pretty neat for a midwest hick that never gets to see movie stars!
