Fox’s “X-Factor” edits out Britney Spears’ former duet partner, Don Philip, coming out as gay on show

When Don Philip faced Britney Spears on this week’s season premiere on Fox’s The X Factor, he was asked what had happened to him in the 12 years since he has recorded a duet with the pop star and now TV show judge.

‘At the time I didn’t think I was worthy,’ Philip said of when he last saw Spears.

That’s the part that TV viewers saw. What they didn’t see was the rest of what he said: ‘I didn’t think you thought it was okay that I am gay.’

Spears then said: ‘I think it is fine you are gay.’

That part of the exchange did not make the telecast for reasons unknown.

But what did make the show was a disastrous performance of Halo by Philip whose voice had grown quite raspy since he and Spears dueted on the song I Will Still Love You which appeared on Spears’ 1999 album Baby One More Time.

All four judges voted ‘no’ on Philip with Simon Cowell saying: good singing voice, honestly.’

Spears tried to be a bit more diplomatic: ‘I feel like through the years maybe you’ve gone through a lot of hardships and battles. But your voice really isn’t up to the bar of the standards of The X Factor and what we want.’

Philip appeared distraught by the rejection and was filmed backstage crying and saying he had somehow let Spears down.

Below is video of the uncomfortable appearance as well as audio of his duet with Spears from all those years ago:

3 Remarks

  1. The whole exchange was cringeworthy. He seems to really need to get himself together before he starts trying to pass auditions like this. It sounded like he had moments of potential but he’s such an emotional wreck that it was just horrible overall.

  2. I hate how the show manipulated things to make Don seem so very unstable. I do believe he has some problems, but no wonder he seemed so upset after the gay disclosure, that was not shown on the show. It just made it look like he came out totally unhinged. I felt really sorry for him during his audition, but I feel even sorrier for him after learning the truth about what actually happened.

By the way, I am loving both Britney and Demi Lovato as judges on the show. It’s refreshing to see and hear open-minded young people when there is a gay contestant.

  3. I and mt friends remained worried about this contestant and what he might do after this show appearance.
Sincerely Britney should have at least gone backstage to check on him. I would do that for a stranger, even Jlo who I am not a fan of would have gone backstage for anyone in that situation specially if you guys sang together. The who thing was too manipulative and contrived, I can’t watch that show anymore, nothing good comes out of it.At least in The Voice the judges are nice and more sensitive to the contestants. When I watch the Voice I don’t feel like I need a shower afterwards.
