Former number one Andy Murray hopes to end his career at Wimbledon – if his body holds up until then

This breaks my heart a little because I have so much respect for Andy Murray.

The former top-ranked men’s player is playing in the Australian Open but he is afraid it might be his last tournament.

“Pretty much done everything that I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn’t helped loads,” a tearful Murray said in Melbourne where he has reached the finals five times but never won. “I think there is a chance the Australian Open is my last tournament. Not feeling good. Been struggling for a long time…I’m not sure I can play through the pain for another four or five months. I’m in a better place than I was six months ago but I’m still in a lot of pain. It’s been tough.’

The 31-year-old British star said he was able to ‘play to a level, but not a level I’m happy about.’

After having the best year of his career in 2016 and ending the season ranked number one, the two-time Wimbledon champion has struggled with hip problems that led to surgery last year.

He has had to compete in an era where nearly all the grand slam titles have been split between Roger Federer (20), Rafael Nadal (17), and Novak Djokovic (14). And yet Murray managed to win Wimbledon twice, the US Open once as well as the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medals in singles.

2 Remarks

  1. So sad to hear this. I myself have had Back Surgery last August and I’m still waiting for the pain to let me go so I somewhat know what he’s doing through. I watched he play at the US Open in 2005, so happy he won his three Majors. God, I wish him the best now and forward.

  2. When Andy Murray first came on the scene I wasn’t a fan but he won me over.

Quite heartbreaking to watch him earlier. I hope he can make it to Wimbledon.
