Flashback Video: When baseball’s Billy Bean came out and was interviewed by Diane Sawyer in 1999
Tomorrow morning, the NBA’s Jason Collins will be interviewed by George Stephanopulos on ABC’s Good Morning America. This will be a must-see interview. We know Jason’s story via his Sports Illustrated cover story but it will be nice to hear his reaction to the outpouring of support – and comments from a few idiots.
So let’s rewind 14 years ago and revisit the story of Billy Bean, the former Major League Baseball player who came out publicly in 1999.
Here is his interview with Diane Sawyer on 20-20.
I remember watching it while at the gym in Long Beach and there I was on the precor machine, weeping.

Jeremy Mason says:
Great article and thanks for the context. 13 years is a long time between acts of bravery.
Given the timeline, I’m thinking you were on an elliptical trainer. Is that what you meant by “precor machine”?
