Flashback Video: “The Gay Bar” episode of “Maude”

Came across this video last night and watched it in its entirety.

It’s a 1977 episode of the brilliant CBS comedy Maude starring future Golden Girl Beatrice Arthur as well as future Different Strokes dad Conrad Bain, future Southern Belle tramp Rue McClanahan, and the William Macy not from Fargo.

What really struck me about this episode was that it was written more than 35 years ago and there are so many people here in the US who remain just as bigoted as the character of Maude’s neighbor Arthur (Bain) is in this episode.

He’s a total homophobe and freaks out when a new gay bar opens in town. He wants to picket to have it shut down and Maude tries to help him see what a bigot he’s being.

Sadly, we still have similarly bigoted people and some of them are elected officials like San Antonio City Councilwoman Elisa Chan who can be heard saying some shamefully anti-gay things during a staff meeting that was recorded on one of her aide’s iPhone. I wrote about that yesterday over at Gay Star News.
