Flashback Video: A queer and cringe-worthy 1973 episode of “Match Game”

This clip was on the my Twitter feed last night so I watched it and cringed.

But it’s interesting to watch and to see what as perfectly fine on daytime network television 40 years ago – perfectly fine to describe gay people as “fairies.”

It’s an episode of Match Game and the question is about Batman and Robin.

Among the panelists is the gay Charles Nelson Reilly.

3 Remarks

  1. This is the environment a lot of grew up in. No wonder we have struggled so much. This happened after Stonewall! disgusting.

  2. You can tell how embarrassed poor Charles Nelson Reilly was. And,how the other (homophobic except for Bret) panel members, including Gene, went along and excepted the joke no matter how it made Charles feel. This is about the time I was 13or14 and super confused, then to come home from school and watch this shit and everyone laughing about it and then to have parents and school mates laugh about it and say I would not have any “queerbait faggots” around me EVER. Truly an awful time in mine and USA history. Worse if you were a super sensitive kid and now adult. It scares me a bit but makes me happy a lot to see how far we have come. As they say on the commericals about the TV’s that don’t need the cable connection anymore and can be pushed into any room they want…”kids nowadays got it pretty good”.

  3. yes very unfortunate. only positive in that clip was seeing the cool couple of the time bobby van ann elaine joyce. silly kids they were …and a complete delight. i miss them both. :-)
