Face-to-Face with Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch

There are some celebrities who show up to the opening of an envelope and if you’ve talked to them in the past month – or even two months – there is little new to say. But you can see Jane Lynch at any number of events and she is always fresh and smart and relevant.

And busy!

The actress, best known for her roles in Best of Show, The 40 Year Old Virgin and The L Word, has a role in the new Fox series Glee which has a lot of good buzz and also Party Down airing on Starz. We chatted at Friday’s “An Evening With Women” event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Jane was there to enjoy the show but also because she is a member of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center’s board of directors which the show raised funds for.

Said Jane of her work with the center: “I was inspired by what the center does – taking kids off the street and taking care of them, loving them, giving them a new suit of clothes and some skills and sending them on their way. And there’s a state-of-the-art medical center that will treat anybody for little or no cost. That costs a lot of money so we have to do events like this in order to meet out financial challenges.”

While Jane had been a very busy and in-demand actress for years, she became a real icon to the LGBT community when she appeared on the cover of The Advocate a few years back as an openly gay woman.

“It’s enriched my life, it’a wonderful,” she said of being more public regarding her sexuality. ” I get invited more places which is really nice! I love it and I love being a spokesperson for those who can’t speak for themselves and that’s the stuff that makes me happy knowing that maybe there’s somebody in Omaha or somewhere and it may be hard for them to be who they are to know that there are people out there who love them and who are fighting for them and to make sure they have rights just like anybody else.”

I wondered how Jane manages to be active in various causes and juggle all of those television and film roles. I had just watched her brilliant performance in Role Models on DVD a week earlier and it is clear how much preparation she brings to her roles.

“It’s easy,” she said of the juggle. “Sometimes, I sit around and feel like I don’t have enough to do. I love doing all of it.”
