Elizabeth Montgomery would have been 75 today
She is gone from this Earth, but the lovely Elizabeth Montgomery will never be forgotten. Thank God we have eight seasons worth of episodes of Bewitched to remember her by. I would like to suggest that someone think about putting some of her many television movies out on DVD. I would snap up a collection that had The Legend of Lizzie Borden, A Case of Rape, The Awakening Land, Sins of the Mother, Dark Victory and The Corpse Had a Familiar Face. She made about two-dozens of these films after Bewitched left the air, they were always highly-rated and I never missed one.
In an interview I did with publicist Howard Bragman earlier this year, he shared an anecdote about Miss Montgomery when she was dying of cancer at the age of 62. This was in 1995 and the press was swarming. Although the daughter of actor Robert Montgomery was famous since birth, she was notoriously press shy and rarely did interviews.
She was also sensitive about her age.
“When she was born, it was in the Hollywood trade papers,” Bragman said. “We all know how old she was and a lot of things about her life. But the last conversation I had with her was her saying, ‘Howard, remember I’m 57 years old.’ She wasn’t exactly 57 but it was the last wish of a dying woman and I told the media ‘She’s 57.’”
Here are a few clips from Bewitched. The first is just groovy! It’s Montgomery playing her cousin Serena who fancied herself a pop star in this episode and sings The Iffin Song. The second is another fun Samantha-Serena clip. Enjoy!
Bonus clip: The closing scenes from Sins of the Mother, one of those movies I want to see on DVD!

In addition to what Greg has mentioned, check out Elizabeth in her first Emmy nominated role: A superb performance in the Season 2 Volume 1 Edition of THE UNTOUCHABLES with Bob Stack. It’s the very first episode and she’s terrific. (Although it is NOT Aunt Clara, there’s an actress in the episode that will remind you an awful lot of her! Elizabeth also has a kissing scene in this episode with David White–Larry Tate!)
Because of my employment, I was fortunate to talk to Elizabeth on occasion over the phone during her last year. I never met her in person, but I did see her as Grand Marshall of the Los Angeles Gay Pride parade, along with Dick Sargent. I thought they both would be greeted with the most thunderous applause and cheers, but when they went by people were quiet as though they couldn’t believe she was there…huge smiles among all the faces…a terrific and unexpected reaction.
Thanks for this shout to to “Lizzy” Greg!
