“Eastsiders” creator Kit Williamson opens up about lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression

I have struggled with anxiety and depression my whole life. Apparently I just missed #mentalhealthawarenessday and I have been meaning to post about the subject for a while. I started self-harming when I was 10, and saw therapists on and off for my teen years. As an adult, my insurance didn’t cover mental health services and at times I felt completely adrift. Every couple of years I would shell out hundreds of dollars to go to a psychiatrist, get prescribed meds, take them home and leave them on the shelf because I couldn’t afford to return for regular medication management. Last year I was finally able to afford therapy, and my therapist worked with my primary care doctor to help me get on an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication. Medication is not for everyone but it has made a huge difference in my life. We need to reform our healthcare system and overhaul our approach to mental health—you never know who is struggling. If you are struggling, please know you are not alone. And if you are considering harming yourself, call the national suicide crisis hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
