Dustin Lance Black says tweet to Sam Smith was attempt at humor – and a defense of history

Dustin Lance Black has clarified his headline making tweet to Sam Smith.

‘Well this has proven to be a lively day on Twitter. From humor to anger. The former my intent… in defense of history. Much love to all,’ Black tweeted.

Black had also tweeted Monday: ‘THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us.’

Black, an Oscar winner in 2009 for the screenplay for Milk, had quickly taken to Twitter on Sunday to correct Smith for thinking he might have been the first openly gay person to have won an Academy Award when he took home the best original song Oscar.

Black, engaged to Olympic diver Tom Daley, had tweeted:‘Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.’

Smith apologized to Black, via Twitter of course, for not being aware that he and several other openly gay people had won Academy Awards before Smith won his.

‘Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack,’ Smith tweeted. ‘I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x’

Smith did not address the Daley reference in his tweet back to Black which had people scratching their heads until Black’s second tweet Monday: ‘Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh.’
