Doris Day on the last time she saw Rock Hudson

Doris Day first met Rock Hudson in 1959 on the set of Pillow Talk, their first movie together.

But it is the last time they saw each other that makes the now 91-year-old retired movie legend the most emotional now.

‘He was very sick. But I just brushed that off and I came out and put my arms around him and said "Am I glad to see you,"’ she tells People Magazine.

Even though he was dying of complications from AIDS during that final visit in 1985, Hudson kept his promise to appear in the premiere episode of Day’s new talk show.

‘He’d get very tired,’ she recalls of his visit to Carmel in California where she lives and where the show was taped.

‘I’d bring him his lunch and fix him a big platter but he couldn’t eat. I’d say "What if I get a fork and feed you" but he said "Doris I can’t eat."’

Saying goodbye was heartbreaking for Day who also starred in Send Me No Flowers and Lover Come Back with Hudson.

He died less than five months after the last visit to Carmel.

‘They had a small plane to get him to the airport,’ Day remembers. ‘We kissed goodbye and he gave me a big hug and he held onto me. I was in tears. That was the last time I saw him – but he’s in heaven now.’

Of their successful partnership she says: ‘I think the reason people liked our movies is because they could tell how much we liked each other. It came across that way on screen. He was a good friend.’
