Don’t miss the beautiful musical ‘The Bridges of Madison County” at Ahmanson Theatre

Was still high from seeing IF/THEN the night before at Pantages when it was time to head downtown to the Ahmanson Theatre on Thursday night for the opening of The Bridges of Madison County — The Musical.

It was raining a bit and I was not credentialed for red carpet but I did snap photos of Wilson Cruz and Jeremy Jordan as they chatted with the press before the show. Wilson performed in Rent at the Ahmanson in the late 90s in the role of Angel while Jeremy has starred in Newsies on Broadway and on TV’s Smash.

Plenty of stars arrived just before it was time to head in including Kate Burton and a gaggle of power gays: Andrew Rannells and Mike Doyle and Jesse Tyler Ferguson and hubby Justin Mikita.

My guest and I got ourselves cookies to quietly munch during the show (take wrappers off before curtain!) and settled in for a gorgeous show.

I knew the story of Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson and her life-changing, four-day whirlwind romance with traveling photographer Robert Kincaid from the great Meryl Streep-Clint Eastwood movie.

Leading man Andrew Samonsky is a lot younger than Eastwood was in the movie and he’s just a hunk with a gorgeous voice and wonderful stage presence. I was completely smitten and yes, he does take his shirt off.

As Fransesca, Elizabeth Stanley is strong and believable as the Italian transplant tempted to leave her dull farm life behind for a dashing new love.

The show will play at the Ahmanson through January 17, 2016.
