Divas Barbra Streisand, Adele, Jennifer Hudson and Shirley Bassey give us an Oscar night to remember

You know a gay man loves his divas and this Oscar ceremony had so many I that I think if I wasn’t already gay, I would’ve turned gay by the end of the evening.

I thought we hit the diva peak when Shirley Bassey, 76 and still unbelievably awesome, soared through Goldfinger during a James Bond tribute. It was as if she was schooling all the lip sync ladies on how it is really done.

Then Catherine Zeta-Jones did a number from Chicago and seemed to be lip syncing which was a letdown after Bassey. But she did do a of dancing so maybe that’s why. But Jennifer Hudson made it all right again when she was perfection in her performance of And I’m Tellin’ You I’m Not Going from Dreamgirls.

All of this and Adele had not even performed yet!

She got her chance when it came time for her to perform the nominated song Skyfall which she co-wrote and ended up winning the Oscar for.  Adele looked great and sounded great but it’s not the kind of soaring power ballad that you want from her on a night like this.

Still, I loved her.

But the best was yet to come – the very, very best.

After the In Memoriam segment, Barbra Streisand was onstage and it was just perfect that she would pay tribute to her great friend Marvin Hamlisch who died last year. She performed a lovely version of a song he co-wrote for one of her most famous movies: The Way We Were.

“Marvin Hamlisch was a composer of extraordinary depth and versatility,” she said. “He was also a very kind and generous friend who could always make me laugh. Over the years, we shared many adventures together. Marvin left us way too soon, but I’ll always have those wonderful, wonderful memories.”

Honestly, if you did not know Streisand was 70, you would think she was at least two decades younger. And her current hairstyle, the same one she wore during the first half of the 70s, makes her look even young.

She has taken great care of herself and she has taken great care of that magnificent voice.

Here’s to the divas!

One Remark

  1. The ONLY thing good about this complete mess!
This televised program should go away…keep it industry like it first was intended.

I love movies but the…faces… just ain’t what they use to be!
