Diana Ross to return to The Hollywood Bowl!

Diana Ross is coming back to the Hollywood Bowl this summer and I’m ecstatic.

It will be a one-night-only performance in August 3 and my calendar is marked!

This will mark the seventh time I’ve seen the most famous Supreme in concert dating back to 1989′s Workin’ Overtime tour. I saw her again in 1991 (Force Behind the Power tour),  1995 (Take Me Higher tour), in 2008 (I Love You tour) then in 2010 and again last year at a corporate event.

I had tickets to the ill-fated 2000 Return to Love tour but it was canceled before it reached Southern California.

Anyway, when I saw her in concert at Hollywood Bowl in 2008, it was as if time had stood still. She looked amazing, the voice was in fine form and she had a capacity crowd wrapped around her finger.

I’ve seen her in concert twice since then at The Nokia Theater in LA and neither appearance lived up to that night at The Bowl. In 2010, she sounded great didn’t engage with the audience much which was disappointing. Then last year was a corporate gig and had a real by-the-numbers feel.

But again, she sounded great vocally and has lost none of her gifts in that area even though she is in her late 60s.

I think The Bowl will once again bring out her best.

Tickets go on sale in May.

5 Remarks

  1. I have seen Diana Ross many times in concert myself, and she never disappoints. She was the first star I ever fell in love with way back in the 60′s. I remember walking several miles in a snowstorm to buy the Supremes’ first single, “Let Me Go The Right Way.” I so wish she’d record again.

    Robert Mobley says:

I paid to see her once at Caesars Palace and they announced she was suffering from “Vegas Voice” and would be lip synching the whole show. I’ve never felt the same about her.

  3. Robert Mobley: why would you make such a blatant lie of that nature? It makes you look quite foolish.
I have seen Diana close to 200xs, no exaggeration. I am part of “the tribe”, a handle for some of Diana’s ardent fan base. There is a recent new book, on sale at Amazon about us, “Diana and her Tribe”.

Greg sorry you missed “Return to Love”. Fortunately, I had tix for both The Pond and her date at The Palace in Detroit. Though I admittedly an ardent fan, “Return to Love” was an absolutely fantastic experience.

Since that tour, she has not been as communicative with her audiences though the love is still very much in evidence. When she appeared at The Pantages in 2004, she gave a career defining performance and did not say a single word to the audience until an hour in when she asked Berry Gordy what song would he like her to sing.

  4. Greg: The “Here and Now Tour” promoting the international smash, “The Force Behind the Power” remains one of my favorite tours. “The Force Behind the Power” was a gold and platinum success in the U.K., Europe, Australia and Japan. Motown completely dropped the ball here. Almost te same for “Take Me Higher” both excellent projects.
